The second Ayurvedic constitution is Pitta. Pitta is in control of digestion, vision, blood and cellular function. Pitta also has to do with heat in the body. When
in balance there will be no issue, when not, Pittas may experience hot flashes and excessive sweating or thirst. Intellect, courage, confidence and logic, all important mental functions, are regulated by Pitta. Imbalance may also present as:
- Rashes
- Acne
- Hair loss
- Decreased mental clarity
- Impatience and anger
To correct an imbalance, one will generally need to address both Vata and Pitta, but to calm Pitta down drink and eat cooling foods. Stay away from things that are excessively hot and spicy. Sweet, bitter, and astringent foods are best at quelling the Pitta influence. Exercise is good, but vigorous exercise is not best for a Pitta person. Pittas should avoid conflict, and have a regular schedule that centers around meal times (7 am breakfast, 12 noon lunch, 6pm dinner with a snack at 3pm). Other tricks include eating a handful of black raisins just before bed and incorporate more dairy into the diet. Finally, meditation, yoga, or any practice that cultivates attention to breath is a wonderful stress reliever. For those with skin issues, coconut oil can be applied to reduce acne.
If you think you may be a Pitta you may be:
Medium sized in body and height
Eyes tend to be gray or green
Lips may be chapped
Breath is metallic (may indicate stomach ulcers)
Skin and hair are smooth and tend to be on the oily side of things
Digestion is strong, may experience heart burn
Pittas are leaders
Are intense and focused/goal oriented
Tend to suffer from anger, jealously, and resentment
Pittas are very strong people. They have big personalities and even bigger plans for themselves and others. They may come off as bossy, and to others, they can be classified as “Type A.”
Typical health issues for the Pitta type:
- Ulcers
- Acidity or heartburn
- Diarrhea
- Sensitivity to heat/hot flashes
- Vision issues
- Anemia
- Jaundice
